Our Story & Mission
Founded in February 2000, Beebe Humane Society began with a small group of compassionate community members determined to improve the lives of animals in Beebe and the surrounding areas. Among those founders was Jaxie Bastin Heppner, who, alongside her late husband, helped establish the organization and lay the foundation for its mission. What started as a grassroots effort has grown beyond expectations into a dedicated organization serving animals across White County.
We are proud to be the only humane society in the area that extends our efforts beyond city limits, responding daily to cases of cruelty, abuse, and neglect throughout the county. Our mission is simple but urgent: to protect animals, advocate for their well-being, and help them find safe, loving homes.
Operating out of private and foster homes, we rely on a network of committed volunteers and foster families. Because of the large area we serve and limited space, we are often at full capacity and are always in need of additional foster homes to continue our work.
Every animal that comes into our care is given the attention and opportunity they deserve. We actively promote adoptable pets through multiple platforms and host regular adoption events in the community. Each potential adopter goes through a thoughtful application and screening process to ensure every placement is a lasting and loving match.
While we strive to save every animal, we also face the difficult reality of pet overpopulation. Beebe Humane Society is not a no-kill organization; however, we are committed to minimizing euthanasia through responsible practices, education, and advocacy for spay and neuter programs. Currently, our euthanasia rate is approximately 6%, limited to animals that are severely ill, aggressive, or otherwise unable to be safely adopted.
As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, we receive no funding from city or county sources and operate without grant support. Our work is made possible entirely through adoption fees, donations, and the generosity of our community.
Together, we continue the mission that Jaxie Bastin Heppner and her late husband began—creating a safer, more compassionate future for animals in need.
